How does my dad co-sign on my credit card application?

credit card application
Brendan asked:

I’m 19 and in college but don’t have a credit card yet, but when I applied they turned me town, so I guess I need a parent to co-sign on it. But it doesn’t say anything about that on the application? What am I supposed to do about that?

There is no such thing as a co-signer on a credit card. You can sign up as the primary account holder, and your father can sign up as the secondary. But that means its his credit card as well, and he will be responsible financially for the balance too. He can also close the account, or make any changes to it.

why do you need a credit card?
credit cards were originally designed for high net worth individuals
such as doctors, business executives etc…. this was because
they had high disposable incomes which enabled a high
probability to pay back what is a basically unsecured loan.
all this reasoning that i want a credit score etc… is a lot of rot.
the credit card companies discovered and liked the idea that low
income earners and college students who get into debt take years
and years to pay it off. its rivers of gold to them.
talk to any older person and ask them how to get stuff and they
would say save, get a job, credit would be considered a last resort.

I agree with Bobo. At 19, the best lesson you can learn is how to live debt (credit card) free. Get a debit card instead.
