How to get rid of a store credit card?

credit card services
bjuody asked:

I recently applied for a job at Macy’s, but something came up and I didn’t accept the job. I opened the mail today and saw a Macy’s credit card! I don’t know what to do, and I know if I called Macy’s Credit Services they are just going to convince me to keep it and be really annoying. I do want to cancel it, but I don’t want my CREDIT HISTORY to be messed up. I could just keep it and buy something once a month. Arg! What should I do?

Cut it up and either throw it out or send it back to them. Just don’t use it. The account will eventually go dormant.

Just close it if you don’t want it.

you could write a letter cancelling your credit card (then you’ll have the record for the credit agencies if they don’t cancel)…or just ‘buck up’ and call and cancel…it’s quicker, easier, and relatively painless – just be firm in your resolve to cancel the card.

    Good Luck!

Either cut it up or lock it in your safe deposit box or
Cancel it , if you think someone else might take it & use it .

If you don’t call and activate it it will close on its own due to inactivity. I would personally keep it just to have an open trade line. You could also do just what you said keep it buy bottle water and pay it off, its a good card to have.

Store credit cards have terrible interest rates and rarely do anything good for your credit. Just don’t use it. Cut it up. Cancel it. Cancelling won’t mess up your credit score.

leave it open and do not use it — it will expire and die a natural death!!!

Whatever you do just don’t call and have it canceled it will effective you negatively on your credit report.

It actually helps your credit scores if you keep the card, and use it on occasion. Pay the card off in full whenever you get a bill. Prompt pay and low balance on credit card accounts look very good on the report. So, this is actually a blessing in disguise.
I am a mortgage broker, People frequently ask they should cancel credit cards they use only a Little. Then when I sow them the credit report, they see how having the card, even though used very little, looks very good on the credit report.

One other reason to keep the card: it is not unusual for a store to have a sale, and to give additional discount if you use the store credit card.
