I used a credit card online and selected the wrong style card; I don’t want to be accused of fraud?

credit card online
Devin M asked:

I was doing a favor for someone and ordering something online with their information. I selected the wrong card type (master card rather then the visa), it sent a message back to me telling me that the bank has not authorized the transaction. I did not mean to select the wrong one and did not want to be blamed for fraud of any kind. Should I just forget about it?

Don’t worry. They have software checks to ensure the CC number matches the brand of CC. They know that on-line mistakes like yours happen thousands of times a day. You just won’t get the product you ordered. The police won’t be knocking on your door. If you really want the product, just re-enter the data.

Dont worrry about it. I have done that before. you just need to log back on and change the card type. your card will just be declined if you used the wrong card type.

That message meant the card type didn’t match the acct number given, that’s all it meant. Visa and Mastercard use different starting digits in the acct numbers, so when you chose the wrong one, the payment system rejected the entry. There’s nothing to worry about.

BTW, that’s not a favor you should be paying anyone. You use your info, tell your friend to use theirs. Your friend shouldn’t be so giving of his/her info.

Please forget it and make sure to check your statement. There should not be any charges for failed online transactions. If you find it, please dispute it with bank by writing a letter to bank’s address given at statement (different than payment address, in some cases). Lets read ahead, for your information, why this error happened?………… MasterCard series starts with 5 and Visa series starts with 4. When you punch-in any card number starting with 4 and then you select card type as Master Card. Then, software should reject transaction without even letting it touch the bank’s server for approval. Thats what happened in your case.
