    Only if you want them to actually give you a credit card.

    They need it to run your credit check.

    It’s easier for them to run a credit check with your SIN but they can also do it without – it just takes them longer, so they are just being lazy.
    Ask them exactly why they need it and if they can do it without and if they can’t, tell them where to go.

    Legally no. Realistically if you want the card you had better give it to them. If you refuse, they will refuse your credit card. It’s not fair, but it is life. It will soon be your national ID number anyway.

    Yes, they run your credit report and credit history using your social security number and if your credit report and history is bad, you won’t get the credit card. If your credit report shows that you pay on time and do not have too high a debt ratio, then you are more likely to get that card. But the social security number is the identifying number for them to be sure it is you when they run the credit report, which is hinged to the SS#.
