I am applying to rent a new apartment and they have have a section on the application with 3 lines for my credit card numbers. This is on a separate page than the one that gives them permission to do a credit check – which really just requires my name and SS number, which I filled out and am perfectly fine with. Why do they want all my credit card numbers and can I refuse to give the numbers to them?

They are using an old school application if they are asking for that. Leave the number out. There is no reason to need that for the screening. If they say anything let them know that you do not feel compfortable giving out that information.
They want them because if you don’t pay the rent or when you leave if it is in bad shape then can charge your credit card
The fact that you have one shows good credit. They cannot get any information from the credit card company or take any money. That would all be illegal. All the credit card company can legally do is verify that you do have an account in good standing.
You have every right to refuse this information. But they could in turn deny you.
They shouldn’t need your credit card #’s. They wouldn’t need to verify if you are current on your payments, because that will show up on a credit report.
I would refuse.
