Your well meaning friend is incorrect. The business conducting the transaction does get all the information given for their records. That doesn’t mean that everyone has viewing privileges though.

Check with the better business bureau and if the seller belongs and is in good standing, it’s most likely a secure transaction as credit thieves usually don’t open legitimate businesses.

    Hi,

But I suggest never give that 3 digits number to any unknown person. As that number is just like the Password.

    Thanks,

When you have the card in hand, go to a store, and swipe it to make a purchase, the store then can report to the credit card company that the card itself was used. When you do any transaction over the phone or on the internet, then the 3 digit number on the back of the card is used to prove that you have it in your hand when you did the transaction. It is not a passcode (as someone previously posted).

As for checking the legitamacy of the business, that could take you forever and a day. What I would suggest is to use PayPal, if they take that kind of payment (very widely used these days). PayPal doesn’t let the vendor see your account info, so it’s completely safe. If they don’t take PayPal, but are an actual company (they have an actual store location, or perhaps you were referred to them by a friend?) then it should be safe – their systems should be encrypting any credit card information you enter, so that only employees with high security clearances and reason to view your information would have access to the actual numbers – not just anyone would be able to see them.

If the worst happens and the card info is comprimised, perhaps used, all it takes is a phone call to your credit card company to dispute the questionable charges and to issue a new card with a new number, shutting down the compromised card. The dispute would remove the fraudulent charges off your account, and you won’t have to worry about it any more.
