I suppose I’m answering my own question but I’d like some validation and assurance:
I get these calls saying they can help me lower my credit card rate to 6% because I’m paying on time, etc. (Recoded message, and “hit 1 to talk to specialist.”)
- they balk when I say I’d like something in the mail (since they “know who I am” — they should have my address, right?)
– they don’t seem to understand (or claim not to) that I’m uncomfortable that THEY called ME. (Never give any additional info to someone that called you. Ask for their number, check them out, and call them back.)
– They named 3 big credit-card issuers who presumably contract “credit card services” .. and yes, one of with whom I might have a card… but they don’t really have ALL the information (about me) either, it seems.
Fishy, huh? I’m glad I gave them zilch additional info.
But – is there a credit card interst rate-break “program” going on?
( Call my Credit Card Company… right? )

clear scam. People who legitmately help you with your credit, don’t seek you out. You seek them out.
Sounds like a scam to me. Good job on not giving info and great job on asking for something in the mail. Call your credit card company and ask them if these calls are true. Give them the details on what is going on and if it is a scam they can let their other customers know about it.
I know this has happened in the past to me and I asked for their direct line to call them right back. Tell them a white lie that your battery is almost dead and that you would like to call them back on another phone. Usually they will just hang up. If they do give you a number, call it and see what number they give. Most likely they will answer the phone claiming they are from what ever credit card company they told you. If so you have a number to check out. Go to bbb.org and check on a company using the phone number and research it. You can also google it. Sometimes there will be info on that particular phone number is a scam. Lastly, if you suspect a scam, report it to the bbb.
It’s some kind of telemarketing scam. They have absolutely no connection to any of your credit card companies. I think they are actually soliciting for a new credit card. Just hang up.
Total scams.
No, there is not a “program” in which the credit card companies are required to participate. Some companies may voluntarily chose to lower your interest rate. However, they are under no obligation to agree. You are more likely to obtain a rate reduction if you call the company directly than if you agree to use the company that called you.
