I am a student in Santa Monica, California who tried to apply for a credit card to try and build my credit but was denied for the simple fact that I did not have enough credit. Since this option failed I just wanted to know if there was any other way of building credit without a credit card.

YES! one easy way you can build you credit is by depositing small amounts of money into your bank account, and taking out small loans from the bank and paying all of them off. this will build your credit without using a credit card
The 1st suggestion was a good one. When I was in your shoes when I turned 18 & just moved out was went to Conn’s Appliance & bought a washer & dryer. This was my 1st piece of credit & went a LONG way.
Call around in your area to see if they work w/ppl w/no credit. There are more companies out there than you think.
Good luck!
Any loans or utilities will show on your credit report. If you live on campus, maybe you could get your cell phone bill put in your name. If you live in an apartment, the rent and any other utilities in your name will go on your credit report. My room mates and I always split whose name was on which bill, so that we could all build credit.
A small ($500) loan from your bank, paid back over a year or less, would also go on your report and help. Loans from your parents would not…
Good luck!
You were denied because you did not have enough credit for the specific card for which you applied. However, you can obtain a “secured” credit card without having any credit. To do so, go to a bank that offers “secured” credit cards to depositors, deposit money in that bank, and obtain a “secured” credit card from that bank. Even if you have no credit, you have sufficient credit to obtain a “secured” credit card, even though you do not have enough credit for the card for which you originally applied. The “secured” credit card will allow you to build credit so that you can eventually obtain a regular, unsecured credit card.
How many companies have you tried? I used a site called findcollegecards, and they had at least 10 carriers that were designed for students. See if something like that can help you.
Good luck!
