Why Citibank declined my credit card application?

credit card application
ronghahaha asked:

I feel Citibank’s customer service is poor. I just applied a “Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card for College Students” credit card online, on Citibank’s official website. They sent me an letter weeks later that says my application was denied. I called the number they told me and the officer said it’s because of that i dont have a high enough credit history. How could i build credit history when i was just applying my first credit card? ? !
and the information they offered to me was very confusing. it doesnt say anything about the requirements you have to meet when i was applying for the credit card. i said i’d like to do this in person again the lady in the phone told me to go to branch banks.
when i went to citibank branch bank, i was told they don’t do anything with credit cards on branch banks. wth…
getting mad of them. will this hurt my credit in the future?

they say that my app. was scored and evaluated by a computer system. and i can get a free copy of my credit report if i respond within 60 days. but i do not know what should i write to them in the letter.
to thinkcreditcard: yah i almost fall asleep with their pls-wait-for-a-second music.

You will just have to start building your credit. Try a local department store, or a secured credit card. It used to easier to get credit cards for student, but now because of the credit crunch ie among other things, credit is very hard to get, even with good credit.

Stay away from Citi – you’re better off without them. They should have called it Sh!ttyBank… Same goes for “Skank of America’ and ‘Chase a Dollar.’

Try Capital One, if they’ll talk to you.

First of all, they should have revealed to you that you can contact the credit bureau/agencies they used in making their decision. Those places have to give you a copy of your credit report & you can see for yourself what is going on.

If you have never had any type of credit at all in the past, you might try putting $500 or $1000 in a savings account (and not touching it). Use it as collateral/security for a loan for the same amount. Make payments on that loan ON TIME. When you get it paid off, you have gained the responsibility of making payments, a decent credit history/score and you’ve gained an “emergency fund” in that savings account.

Ask yourself why you want credit? Whatever you do do NOT get a store card. Their interest rates are horrendous! Better still avoid credit at all costs.

Personally, I hate Citibank. They do have very poor customer service reps. One time I was so frustrated I asked to speak to a supervisor and the rep hung up on me!

It won’t hurt your future credit. If you do a lot of credit applications, your score will go down some. But just a few shouldn’t affect it.

If you want a student card, I’d look at the cards from Discover and Chase. They are for students. I would assume these would not be too hard to get because most students don’t have a credit history – which is why they need the student card. But I don’t know that for sure.

If you want to check your credit score/history…you can get a free report from each credit reporting agency one time a year.

Yeah, Citi is hit-and-miss…I haven’t had any problems with them but have heard of stories like this before. Having said that, I’ve heard of these stories from ALL credit card issuers :)

Another card that a lot of people like, and have cards designed specifically for students, is Discover. They have some cool features, card customization, personalization, attractive incentives, etc, etc…but remember, all this cool stuff is designed to get people to use the card in the hopes that they won’t pay off the balance.

Try and check out some of the features and services – they only deal with Students so something there might work for you.
