if you’ve had bad credit, it’s tough to get a credit card, since this is an unsecure loan to you. settling the debts is pretty bad too because it means you’re paying less than amount owed. best solution to work and rebuild your credit is to open a secured credit card if need be, use it and pay it promptly and on time. after you are consistently paying this on time.. try again to get a new card.

Just keep trying there is no reason they shoukd reject you I would say you were simply unlucky

If you don’t show any debt, do you show any installment or revolving accounts? If you don’t you may have been rejected due to lack of a credit history since your previous history is so old.

Negative things can stay on your report for 7 to 10 years. I would get a report from all 3 agencies and check to see what they show. Experion, Trans Union, Equifax.

The best way to establish credit is to get a secured credit card. Many well known banks offer them (put $300 into an account and receive a credit card). These will show up as reporting on the credit bureaus. Try to get a gas card like Beacon/Valero, JcPenney, Kohl’s, apply for credit at a furniture store those are usually easy to get. Pick out a finance company like Wells Fargo Financial or a local credit union they are more forgiving with credit issues.
